Parenting is hard enough on its own, (just like Entrepreneurship). How about when you add summer break to the mix? Or remote work? Sounds like a recipe for disaster… or is it?
There’s no reason why you — as a parent— can’t make the most of your life as an Entrepreneur. Don’t let your individuality slip away. You’re more than just a parent! It’s totally fine for parenthood to take priority, you're important too. Your goals and aspirations matter (just as much as your children’s).
It’s not always easy to see that. So we’ve crafted a list of 7 Easy Ways to balance Parenthood and Entrepreneurship.
1. Prioritize Yourself
Your children play a huge role in your day-to-day. When you commit to having kids, you make a promise to put them before yourself in most situations. Still, most parents say they miss doing the things they did pre-kids.Parenting takes up A LOT of mental capacity. Here’s the thing — you have so much room to build your dreams and grow. Carve out just 20 minutes each for you and you’ll feel the difference.
2. Set Clear Boundaries
Boundaries are key to a successful life. Set them with your family and your colleagues. Separating yourself from work when you’re home can be the best thing you do. Remember: you don’t have to say yes to everything. If you’re feeling overwhelmed with work, it’s okay to turn down that party invitation. If you don’t have the capacity to take on another work project: delegate it. You should set the tone here!
3. Ask For Help (even from your kids)
Your daily to-do list can quickly fill up the entire notepad. This is the perfect opportunity to ask for help! Delegate household tasks to your partner and your kids — even if it’s just little things.. This will create an environment that functions on its own (kind of like automation). Don’t hesitate to ask for help watching your little ones, too. It takes an army!
4. Separate Work and Home
It’s a MUST. Sometimes it feels impossible due to remote working circumstances— separating work and home life can be done in many ways. Set certain hours for work and certain hours for family. You shouldn’t feel like your home life and work life are merging into one. If you are, it’s time to decide how to separate yourself from work when you’re home, and vice versa. You should be available for family emergencies any time. Work “emergencies” can be handled when you’re back in the office.
5. Stick To a Plan
This is a great way to alleviate stress. Be careful — sometimes we get too caught up in our daily calendars (and we forget to do what makes us feel good). Along with your meetings and deadlines, map out your downtime on your daily and weekly planners. Your time is so valuable.
6. Stay Present
In the hustle and bustle of everyday, it’s hard to imagine a life without worries. One of the easiest ways to ease your mind about all of the little things (and some of the big ones): stay in the present moment. Don’t think about what went wrong yesterday or what might go wrong tomorrow. Bring positive energy into your day by focusing on the present moment. Practice daily affirmations and grounding techniques to bring yourself back to reality (even in the midst of chaos).
7. Teach Your Children About Entrepreneurship
This is a great way to take some of the pressure off of yourself. i Teach your children work ethic and success skills at a young age. Kids mimic what they see — so if you show them all of the amazing possibilities of Entrepreneurship, they’ll likely grow a passion for Entrepreneurship, too. Set your children up for success. Give them knowledge and power so that they can make the right choices for their own future and see the example you’ve set for them as a parent.
