Whether you're a fitness coach, a business coach, or both, it's an exciting, rewarding career. You get to do what you love every day – helping others!
People often ask how they can become the perfect fitness or business coach. There are many things that you need to know in order to be successful, but there are also some great resources available online that will help you find your niche. To start off, here are 10 tips for being the perfect fitness and/or business coach!
Tip #1: Keep your skills sharp.
Read books, blogs, and online articles to learn new strategies for coaching fitness or business! That includes our blog here at She Reigns Creative that you're reading right now. You could also take classes in an element of coaching that you're not experienced with yet, such as social media marketing for business coaches.
Tip #2: Invest in your health
If you're not healthy, then you can't be the best coach for fitness OR business! Make sure to drink plenty of water and get enough sleep each night so that you have the energy necessary to work long hours with clients.
Tip #3: Find a program that's right for YOU.
You can only start coaching others when you're passionate about your business yourself. So, if you're not already working in a field you love, yet you're considering coaching others in that field – REconsider!
Tip #4: Start small.
If you're looking for a new career, don't quit your day job yet! Start coaching just one or two clients on the side and see how it goes.
Tip #5: Listen to your clients.
The best fitness coaches are great listeners who can give their clients the motivation they need to work hard each week. The perfect fitness coach also knows when an exercise is too difficult. The perfect business coach also sees when a client/customer is struggling to get to the next level.
Tip #6: Just ask!
The best fitness coaches don't wait for their clients to come up with a plan. They know that they need to be the ones providing instruction and motivation in order for change to happen. The perfect business coach has this same mentality, knowing it's important not only to have goals but also directions on how those goals can be achieved. So if your client is lagging behind on their goals – whether you're a fitness coach or a business coach – you need to be the one to go to them. Don't expect them to come to you with a concrete outline of their problem areas. That's up to you to figure out for them!
Tip #7: Keep tabs on your client's progress.
One of the best things a fitness coach does is keep their clients accountable by checking in with them to see how they're doing and, more importantly, if they've experienced any setbacks along the way. For example, if you tasked a client with improving their social media with more and better posts, and they haven't made any progress yet, check in to see where they're hitting those roadblocks.
Tip #8: Help your clients find so-called "quick wins."
It's a common misconception that fitness and business coaches have to overhaul their clients' lives in order for them to see results. Not true! A quick win is something that can be accomplished quickly with minimal effort, yet still has a big payoff – like getting an inspiring quote up on the wall, or setting a new revenue number with sales that aren't much higher than the current number. These "quick wins" will inspire the client to do MORE!
Tip #9: Be patient.
When you work with fitness and business clients, it's important to be mindful of their limits and comfort levels in order for them to grow at a pace that is best suited to them. There are no imposed timelines or deadlines when working with people who are on the path towards living healthier lives – though it is always helpful to draft up a concrete document/outline for goal setting and measurement.
Tip #10: Be optimistic.
Again, fitness and business coaching isn't a race to the finish line – but it is helpful to have an idea of how you'll measure success for your client at any given point during their progress. Encourage clients in your care by letting them know that they are more than just their fitness goals or their business – while these things are important, your client will always fear disappointing you. Let them know that this is NEVER the case. Instead, you are their biggest cheerleader. Their biggest coach!
Whether you're a fitness coach or a business coach, it's important to keep a positive mindset and to put you and your client's health and well-being before all other goals. If you do this, you'll truly be able to take business coaching or fitness instruction to the next level – and take your clients right up there with you!!
